Overview:
🍱 25 Must-Try Konbini Foods
🍙 Filling Snacks
Japanese konbini are full of fresh, comforting, and seriously delicious food options! They’re also perfect for breakfast since many restaurants in Japan don’t open early, making them our go-to spot for fueling up before a morning of exploring.
Konbinis also always update their stock with seasonal flavors and limited-edition treats for holidays and collaborations. This means there is always something new and exciting to try, no matter when you visit!
👉 Tip for spotting Limited Editions: Konbinis use special tags like「限定」(gentei) or「期間限定」(kikan gentei) on the packaging to mark limited-time items!

1. Onigiri (Rice Balls)
Our ultimate grab-and-go food! They’re made from white rice pressed into a neat triangle or circle shape and stuffed with various filling variations, from classics like tuna mayo and shrimp mayo to savory or sour choices like umeboshi (pickled plum) and mentaiko (pollock roe).
🍙 It’s wrapped in a way that keeps the rice and seaweed separate so it stays crisp. Just follow the numbered tabs to open it, though it can be a bit tricky the first time!

2. Hot Cakes
These pancakes come in a pack of two super fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth cakes, pre-sealed with syrup and butter inside. It was surprisingly satisfying when we first had it and perfect for breakfast or a snack.
🤯 Must-try: Add a piece of Karaage between them for a sweet and savory combo that will blow your mind!

3. Cup Ramen
We had a hard time choosing from the shelves of different flavors, from tonkotsu, seafood, curry, or miso. You can try classic brands like Nissin and Maruchan, or go for the popular chain restaurant, Ichiran, known for its premium instant ramen. Plus, you’ll often find novelty noodles featuring popular characters, like Sanrio or Doraemon!
🍳 Must-try: A perfect cup of ramen isn’t complete without a boiled egg and karaage from the konbini!
🍜 Tip: Hot water dispensers are always available, so you can enjoy your ramen right in the konbini.
👉 Bonus: You should definitely check out a ramen museum while in Japan! Book this private Yokohama day tour to visit the Cup Noodles Museum with a local guide, or grab a ticket for the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum, where you can eat, learn, and even make your own ramen!

🔥Hot Counter Classics
If you smell something delicious when you walk in, it’s definitely coming from the hot counter! They’re served hot, fresh, and ready to go, usually located right next to the cashier’s desk and kept in a glass display or a steamer cabinet.
There are plenty of options like crunchy fried chicken cutlets or nuggets, oden (broth with fish cakes, tofu, radish, etc.), and fluffy steamed buns (bao) that come in tons of different sweet and savory flavors. But here are some of our favorites!

4. Oden
If you happen to visit Japan during the colder months, you absolutely have to try Oden! This classic Japanese comfort food is essentially a mini hot pot.
🍢 You’ll usually spot the simmering tray full of ingredients slowly cooking in a light, savory dashi broth. You get to choose your own combination of toppings like daikon (radish), hard-boiled eggs, different types of fish cakes, and chewy konjac. You or the cashier will scoop your choices into a takeout bowl!
5. Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken)
This boneless fried chicken is crispy on the outside, incredibly juicy on the inside, and seasoned just right.
👉 Famichiki from FamilyMart is our absolute favorite for its tender meat and subtle hint of spice that everyone can handle.
👉 If you’re at Lawson, be sure to grab the karaage-kun! You get bite-sized nuggets in a box, and they come in different flavors like original, cheese, and garlic!
🍗 Must-try combo: Try the viral fried chicken hack by sandwiching a piece between sweet pancakes or an egg sandwich. They’re both a sweet-and-savory combo that will blow your mind!

6. Pizza-Man (Pizza Flavored Steamed Buns)
You will find various types of steamed buns right by the cashier in a separate hot cabinet. From classics like Nikuman (savory pork bun) to keema curry, mapo tofu, and sweet red bean paste.
🍕 Our personal favorite and the one we think you need to try is the Pizza-Man! It’s a genius mash-up of a Chinese bao and an Italian pizza pocket. You get a pillowy, soft steamed bun filled with hot tomato sauce and melted cheese.
7. Korokke
😋 A crispy potato croquette made from deep-frying mashed potato patties. Crunchy outside, soft and creamy inside, and a variety of fillings like beef or cheese.
🥔 Chips
Get ready for an overwhelming, brightly packaged snack heaven! The chip and cracker aisles at the konbini are massive and full of unique Japanese twists on classics.
Like we mentioned with the other foods, there are also seasonal and locally limited flavors beyond the classic salt and pepper, like mentaiko (spiced pollock roe), cheesy gratin, Hokkaido butter, and squid!

8. Koikeya Spicy Fries
If you love a kick of heat, you have to grab a bag of Koikeya Kara Mucho. The fire on the packaging screams spice, and the flavor absolutely lives up to it. These thin, crispy potato chips aren’t just spicy. They combine a nice chili heat with a perfect, rich umami flavor. It’s a bold taste that doesn’t overpower the slightly sweet potato base.

9. Umaibo (うまい棒)
For a nostalgic Japanese bite, look for Umaibo (literally means “delicious stick”). These puffy, corn-based cylinders are an iconic childhood snack, usually costing around ten yen!
🍟 They have a light, Cheetos-like crunch and are coated in tons of flavor. You’ll always find regular flavors like cheese, corn, and vegetable salad, but there’s also regional flavors (like monjayaki in Tokyo or okonomiyaki in Kansai) and seasonal flavors for holidays like Halloween and Christmas.
👉 Tip: Some konbini also offer them in bulk! We always get the mentaiko flavor (purple wrapper)!

10. Calbee Consomme Punch Chips
Calbee makes many of Japan’s most popular chips, but these are the ones we absolutely loved the most!
🌟 Calbee Consomme Punch Chips: Thin and crispy with a light, satisfying texture and full of savory flavor. These are classics for a reason!
🌟 Calbee Pizza Potato: Don’t miss these if you love crunchy, salty snacks! They’re thicker and topped with melted cheese flavor.
🌟 Calbee Jagabee: These potato sticks come in a cup (like a mini ramen cup!) and have a satisfying crunch. We love the original flavor (blue cup)!
🍬 Candy & Gummies
Japan offers a playful mix of sweet, chewy, and surprisingly true-to-life flavors, from iconic Kit-Kat bars to chewy and fizzy gummies in many unique varieties. Whether you’re into tangy gummies, fizzy ramune bites, or chocolate with a twist, Japan’s candy aisle never runs out of surprises.

11. Japanese KitKats
You will be amazed by the endless variety of KitKat flavors in Japan! They have so many flavors like matcha and strawberry cheesecake, to sake, yuzu, and even bizarre flavors like wasabi. KitKats make the perfect souvenirs and snacks, and konbinis are the perfect place to get them!
🌽 Keep an eye out for special versions like Hokkaido’s grilled corn or Okinawa’s sweet potato, which are exclusive to specific geographical areas.
👉 Tip: Most general konbini don’t carry the large multipacks or the more unusual ones. For those, we found that drug stores or Don Quijote are the best places to look.

12. Candemina Gummies
If you love a super chewy, slightly sour candy, we recommend trying Candemina! These gummies have unique shapes, a firm but chewy texture, and are coated with just the right amount of sourness.
🌊 The classic versions usually come in wavy shapes, but they also have seasonal or collaboration releases with special flavors and shapes like shuriken, stars, or bears!

13. UHA Kororo Gummies
UHA Kororo is one of the most popular gummy snacks in Japan, and the grape flavor is the one you’ll see everywhere. They come in a small resealable pouch, so they’re super easy to snack on while you’re out and about.
🍇 The best part is the texture. The thin “grape skin” on the outside has a little snap when you bite into it, and the inside is soft, juicy, and sweet. It really feels like biting into a mini grape, just a candy version.
🍨 Desserts
Konbini desserts in Japan are tasty and comforting. This refrigerated section is a sweet-tooth paradise, stocking everything from cakes to ice creams and creamy, rich puddings.
The best part is the non-stop rotation of deliciousness, including seasonal sweet special flavors you can only find at certain times of the year, like cherry blossom during spring or sweet potato in the fall.

14. Creme Brûlée Ice Cream
Grab this creamy, rich Crème Brûlée Ice Cream in the ice cream aisle. It’s vanilla ice cream topped with a crunchy caramelized sugar layer, giving it that authentic brûlée texture. This is easily one of our favorite items to get at konbinis and always a must at least a few times every Japan trip!

15. Choco Monaka Jumbo
This ice cream sandwich bar is super popular online and for good reason. It’s creamy vanilla ice cream wrapped in a crispy wafer and chocolate, with a crunchy chocolate core that makes every bite so satisfying.
🧇 There’s also a vanilla flavor with no center chocolate, but to us, it just doesn’t hit the same!

16. Häagen-Dazs Japan Exclusives
Japan has some of the best limited-edition Häagen-Dazs flavors in the world, and they’re a must-try for any ice cream lover. From kinako mochi and hojicha to yuzu cheesecake, each one feels uniquely Japanese.
✨ Depending on the season you’re traveling in, you’ll find special editions like the Spoon Crush series or seasonal highlights such as sweet potato in autumn.

17. Purin
Purin is a silky smooth custard pudding with a sweet caramel layer. The sweetness is just right, and the elegant, slightly bitter caramel sauce goes perfectly with the rich, velvety pudding that melts in your mouth.
😋 Look out for different pudding variations like Hotcake Soufflé Pudding or Honey Castella Pudding Cake. They’re a perfect treat combo for anyone who loves both sweets and bread!
🥤 Drinks
Whatever you grab from the konbini, there’s a drink to pair with it all. The convenience store selection goes far beyond the usual Pepsi and Coke. You’ll find a whole spectrum from healthy options to unique Japanese teas, sodas, alcohol, and even smoothies.

18. DIY Smoothies
🥭 Yes, you can even hit your fiber goals in Japanese konbini! Head to the dedicated freezer for frozen fruit cups, pick one, take it to the cashier, and blend it yourself at the smoothie machine for just 300 yen. Berry, tropical, and banana chocolate are the top picks!

19. Pocari Sweat
💦 A lightly sweet electrolyte drink that is the Japanese equivalent of American Gatorade, perfect for rehydrating after a hot day or a long walk. It’s an ion drink that comes in several sizes and is great if you need lots of ion replacement after putting in all of your steps exploring.

20. Bottled Teas
Grab green tea, roasted hojicha, jasmine, or milk tea, hot or cold depending on the season. There are endless options from sweet to bitter to enjoy with whatever snacks or meals you pick up at the konbini.
🍵 Ito En is a popular unsweetened green tea if you want a non-sweet drink, it’s the one you see all over Japan, particularly Tokyo, with Shohei Ohtani!

21. Canned Coffee
For a quick caffeine boost, look for Boss, Wonda, and Georgia canned coffees. You will see these brands in every konbini.
☕ You can grab one hot from the special heated shelves (usually marked with red colors or placards that say “Hot”) or get it iced!
🍞 Bread & Sandwiches
These Japanese signature breads and sandwiches are soft, tasty, and totally comforting. Every konbini has an incredible range, from classic egg and teriyaki chicken to sweet, creamy flavors that are baked or freshly made every morning!

22. Classic Sandwiches
All stores have a refrigerated section with perfectly triangular sandwiches, filled with quality options like pork cutlet, tuna, and egg.
🥪 You need to try the famous Tamago Sando. It has fluffy white bread and creamy egg salad that has a hint of sweetness and pepper.
💫 Must-try combo: Upgrade your Tamago Sando with a piece of Karaage inside for an epic konbini meal.

23. Fruit Cream Sandwiches
The Fruit Cream Sandwich has a thick cloud of whipped cream and fresh fruit, usually strawberries, kiwi, or oranges, between pillowy milk bread. It is light, refreshing, and very Instagram-worthy. Our favorite is the viral strawberry cream sandwich!
🍓 Look for seasonal treats, like peaches and cream in summer. A hot latte with one of these is a perfect start to the morning!

24. Melonpan
Melonpan is named for its melon-like top, but it doesn’t taste like melon! It’s a sweet bread with a crunchy top and a soft, airy inside.
🍈 Sometimes you’ll find it plain, but there are also delicious versions filled with cream or chocolate.

25. Mochi Shokkan Roll Cake
If you see a roll cake at Lawson, grab it! The Mochi Shokkan Roll Cake is a spongy roll cake with a wonderfully chewy, mochi-like texture that makes it so much fun to eat, and it is filled with rich, creamy whipped cream.
🪵 Look out for seasonal flavors like matcha or strawberry, and depending on the region, it might be filled with rich Hokkaido cream or Jersey milk.
