Section A: Getting Around Mt. Fuji

Tip #1: Rent a Car (It Makes Everything 10x Easier)

Why it matters

Mt. Fuji spots are spread out. A lot of the best viewpoints, lakes, cafes, and parks aren’t close to each other, so you’ll end up spending a lot of time getting around if you don’t plan.

Public transportation in the area is mostly buses (no metro system), and they can be slow and inconvenient if you want to hit multiple spots in one day.

What to do

Rent a car. It gives you full freedom to:

• Chase Mt. Fuji views with clear skies
• Change plans last minute
• Visit more spots in less time

When you pick up your car, make sure you ask for an ETC card (toll card for cars).

• Cost: about 330 yen (~$2 USD)
• It lets you go roll through toll gates slowly without stopping to pay; otherwise, you will have to stop and wait to pay at each toll gate, which can take 10-15 minutes (you’ll hit a lot just between Tokyo and Mt. Fuji)

Budget heads‑up (Car tolls can get expensive)

Tolls in Japan can add up fast, especially over long distances.

We’ve always spent more on tolls than on gas around Mt. Fuji. Not a deal breaker, just something to budget for so it doesn’t surprise you. 

Ex: We spent over $100 on tolls on our last Mt. Fuji trip, and around $70 for gas.

Section B: The Biggest Challenge – Visibility & Weather

Tip #2: Mt. Fuji Is Cloudy A LOT (So Plan Like It Is)

Reality check

Mt. Fuji is only fully visible around 100 days a year (if that lol).

You can plan everything perfectly and still get clouds. Your goal should be to plan for Mt. Fuji with as few cloudy times as possible.

Best months to visit (by vibe)

Want the iconic snowy peak?
→ Winter (Dec–Feb) and early spring or late autumn

Want cherry blossoms + Fuji?
→ Late March to early April (beautiful, but often cloudier)

Want fall colors?
→ October to mid-November (amazing combo of red leaves + Fuji)

Season to avoid (if you can): Summer (July–August)
→ Hot and humid, often cloudy, no snowy peak, no cherry blossoms or fall leaves, and still very busy since a lot of people travel to Japan during the summer

Also, keep in mind that many flower parks around Mt. Fuji only bloom for a few weeks, so timing matters a lot.

Where to check the forecast

Don’t just search “Mt. Fuji weather”. One of the most important Mt. Fuji viewing tips is to check the exact side you’re visiting by day. Mt. Fuji might be covered in clouds in the south and completely clear in the north.

We also recommend starting to monitor the forecast at least a week in advance, and keep checking daily as your trip gets closer. The weather can change quickly, and tracking it over time helps you spot clearer days and adjust plans if needed.

Use these areas as a rough guide, then check the exact locations of the spots you plan to visit for the most accurate forecast.

• North side: Fujiyoshida
• South side: Fuji
• West side: Fujinomiya
• East side: Yamanakoko

Bonus tip: Check the live Mt. Fuji camera

If you want to know what Mt. Fuji looks like right now on the day you’re visiting, you can also check the live camera feed from different viewpoints around the mountain.

It shows real-time conditions, so you can quickly see if the mountain is clear, partly cloudy, or totally hidden before heading to a spot. Super helpful for deciding whether to go straight to viewpoints or switch to a backup plan!

Tip #3: Book Cancellable Hotels (Or Book Last‑Minute)

Why

Mt. Fuji trips are very view‑based, and the weather changes fast.

If it’s going to rain for two days straight, you probably don’t want to lock yourself into expensive non‑refundable plans. 

What to book

• Hotels with free cancellation
• Car rentals with flexible cancellation

If your schedule allows, last‑minute bookings work great too. Make sure to start checking the weather around Mt. Fuji at least a week before you intend to visit!

Where to stay near Mt. Fuji

We recommend staying in Fujiyoshida, especially near Lake Kawaguchiko.

It’s one of the best bases for:

• Classic Fuji views
• Popular photo spots
• Early morning access

Around Lake Kawaguchiko (Fujiyoshida area): These give you the best access to classic Fuji views and popular photo spots.

South of Mt. Fuji: Good option if Lake Kawaguchiko is fully booked or you’ve already seen the north side of Mt. Fuji.

Tip #5: Always Have Backup Plans

Because yes… sometimes Fuji just says “not today”.

And you don’t want to spend your whole day refreshing the weather app in a parking lot.

Fuji Safari Park – A drive‑through style zoo where animals roam freely. Super unique and fun. Be sure to check the Fuji Safari Park website for safety guidelines and key details if you’re driving a car.

Fuji‑Q Highland -Insane roller coasters with Fuji views on clear days. Even on cloudy days, it’s still a blast. Get your day pass here! For priority access, arrive early to buy a priority pass at the entrance.

Maple Corridor (if it’s in season) – Only in autumn, but absolutely stunning when the leaves turn red. Even without Mt. Fuji, it’s worth visiting.

Shiraito Falls – One of the most beautiful waterfalls in the area. Easy walk, refreshing, and great year-round.

Tip #6: Book a Mt. Fuji View Shinkansen Seat

If you’re traveling between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka, this is a great opportunity to see Mt. Fuji.

You don’t get many chances to see Mt. Fuji during a Japan trip, so take it when you can.

Section E: Timing Is Everything

Tip #7: Choose Your Season Wisely

Best overall:

October – November (fall) → fall foliage + beautiful Mt. Fuji views and chance for snowy peak during late fall
December–February (winter) → best chance to see the iconic snowy peak + generally less cloudy

Best overall:

March–April (spring) → iconic cherry blossoms BUT higher cloud chances

Worst:

July–August (summer) → hot, humid, crowded, and usually cloudy with no snowy peak or seasonal colors

Tip: A lot of flower fields only bloom for a couple of weeks, so timing your visit really matters

Tip #8: Be Patient – Clouds Can Move Fast

Sometimes Fuji is hidden…

…and 10 minutes later it’s fully out.

Don’t panic‑leave right away. If the sky isn’t completely covered and you see clouds moving, give it some time! We’ve seen it clear up more times than we can count. 

BUT if the entire sky is covered in clouds, and the weather app doesn’t say it’s going to change, you should probably start looking for other things to do that don’t require Mt. Fuji views or look at the weather in different directions of Mt. Fuji for other spots that might be available.

Tip #9: Go Early to Popular Photo Spots

Especially these:

• Arakurayama Sengen Park (Chureito Pagoda) – The iconic pagoda + Mt. Fuji view you see everywhere. Tons of stairs, even more people.
• Oishi Park – Lakeside flower park with Mt. Fuji in the background. Super pretty and super crowded during the blooming seasons. You can also book this tour that covers all the must-visit viewpoints of Mt. Fuji if you only want a day trip from Tokyo!
• Fujisan Yume No Ohashi Bridge – A modern pedestrian bridge lined up perfectly with Mt. Fuji for photos. This bridge has gotten so popular that they have staff to direct the queue.
• Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway – Cable car up to a viewpoint over Lake Kawaguchi and Fuji. A short ride, but it can have long lines going up and down. Grab your ticket here!
• Oshino Hakkai – Traditional village with clear spring ponds and street food. It has narrow paths that get packed quickly with tourists, locals, and tour groups.

Simple strategy: Go early, get your photos first, then relax with food and cafés after. Your photos will be better, wait times will be shorter, and your stress level will be way lower.

Tip #10: Visit on Weekdays

Mt. Fuji spots are busy almost all the time.

But weekends can be significantly busier since you’ll be seeing more tourists and locals who have the day off.

If you can, go on weekdays, especially Tuesday to Thursday, for:

• Fewer tour buses
• Shorter waits
• Easier parking
• Cleaner photos

Final Thoughts

Mt. Fuji is one of those places that’s 100% worth the effort… as long as you plan smartly.

It’s not the kind of destination where you just show up and hope for the best. The weather changes fast, the crowds can be intense, and the best viewpoints take a little strategy. But it’s unforgettable when everything lines up, and you see Mt. Fuji clearly.

If you’re into shows, you might recognize this spot! It’s actually been featured in films and TV, like Episode 6 of The Last of Us.

Photo tip: Walk a little farther along the path to find different angles of the bridge with the mountains behind it, especially nice in soft morning or evening light.

Hoodoos Viewpoint

Next, head back toward Banff for a super easy viewpoint stop. You’ll overlook the Bow River with these cool natural rock spires right below you. It’s beautiful any time of day, but golden hour is extra magical.

Tip: Don’t miss snapping a pic with the iconic red chairs! They’re front-row seats to the stunning views of the Hoodoos.

Best time to visit: Late afternoon or golden hour brings out the textures in the hoodoos and the color of the Bow River.

Cascade of Time Garden

Tucked right beside downtown Banff, this place feels straight out of a fairytale. Stone pathways, flowers, and mountain peaks in the distance make it perfect for slow moments and cute photos. 

Seasonal note: The gardens are at their best in late spring through summer when flowers are fully in bloom.

Tip: Bring a zoom lens and try to capture the flowerbed in front of the Admin building with the mountains in the background. It’s a classic Banff shot!

Bow River Pedestrian Bridge

End your day with a walk across this wooden bridge. The mountains reflect off the water, and the sunset glow behind Mount Rundle always looks stunning.

Photo tip: Shoot straight down the bridge for leading lines, or step off to the side for river reflections with Mount Rundle in frame.

Day 2: Banff Classics

Must-dos: Bow Falls, Surprise Corner, & Banff Gondola

Today is all about Banff’s most iconic sights. You’ll explore waterfalls, historic viewpoints, and mountain panoramas in a smooth, well-paced loop that stays close to town. It’s a classic Banff day that delivers big views without a lot of driving.

Best time to visit: Morning is ideal when the light is soft, and crowds are minimal.

This lookout 100% lives up to the hype. It gives you the most dramatic view of the Fairmont Banff Springs surrounded by towering mountains.

Best time to visit: Early morning or golden hour offers softer light and fewer people. The parking lot is also small, so you may not be able to find a spot later in the day.

Short walk: There’s a nearby path if you want to linger and enjoy the view a bit longer.

Day 3: Moraine Lake + Lake Louise

Must-dos: Moraine Lake, Rockpile Trail, & Lake Louise canoe

This is the day most people dream about when they picture Banff. You’ll visit Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, two of the most photographed lakes in the world, with bright turquoise water and dramatic mountain backdrops. It’s an early start and requires a bit of planning, but the views, experiences, and once-in-a-lifetime moments make it completely worth it.

Moraine Lake is one of the most iconic spots in Banff National Park, known for its bright turquoise water and the dramatic Valley of the Ten Peaks. It seriously looks unreal in person.

Canoeing on Moraine Lake: Canoes are available at Moraine Lake Lodge on a first-come, first-served basis (no reservations). While it’s on the pricier side (~$160 CAD), it’s a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. Being out on the water with the Ten Peaks towering around you makes the lake feel even more unreal. Sunrise is especially beautiful when the lake is calm, quiet, and perfect for photos.

Pro Tip: Private vehicles aren’t allowed anymore, so grab an early shuttle with Moraine Lake Bus and make sure to book in advance since spots sell out early (especially for early morning)! Reserve here!

Important: Moraine Lake is only accessible from around June 1 to October 14 due to icy conditions and potential avalanches, so plan your trip accordingly.

Tour option: Reservations for Moraine Lake and Lake Louise can be hard to secure, especially in peak season. Take a short 5-minute walk up to the iconic Moraine Lake viewpoint overlooking the lake. Turquoise water with the Ten Peaks in the background is honestly … chef’s kiss!

After Moraine Lake, head over to this gem. You can canoe here too or take the short hike to Fairview Lookout for a perfect view of the lake and the Fairmont. 

Tip: Canoes and ice skates are available for rent at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. In the winter, the lake can freeze enough to skate, making it magical in a whole new way!

End your afternoon with a calm gondola ride up the mountain. If you’re lucky, you might even spot wildlife from above.

Photo-friendly: Wide-open views at the top make this a great spot for landscape photos on clear days.

Weather note: Visibility depends on conditions, so check the weather before heading up for the best views.

Day 4: Icefields Parkway Adventure

Must-dos: Peyto Lake & Bow Lake

Today is all about driving one of the most scenic highways in the world. While the stops themselves are incredible, one of the biggest highlights isn’t a single viewpoint; it’s the drive between them, with nonstop, jaw-dropping views of the Canadian Rockies in every direction. Take your time on this day, pull over often, and enjoy the journey just as much as the destinations.

Peyto Lake

This lake looks like it’s straight-up glowing; the bright blue water is insane in person. The walk to the viewpoint is easy, and the view is unreal.

Easy viewpoint walk: The walk from the parking lot to the main viewpoint is short and mostly paved, making it accessible for almost everyone.

Footwear tip: In colder months or shoulder season, parts of the path can be icy or snowy, so wear shoes with good grip.

Bow Lake

One of the quieter stops along the drive, with calm water and mountains wrapping around the shoreline. It’s peaceful and feels less crowded than most stops.

Best time to visit: Early morning or golden hour is ideal when the water is calm and reflections are at their best.

Quick stop friendly: Easy to pull over and explore without committing a lot of time, perfect if you’re pacing a long drive.

Abraham Lake

Known for its crazy blue color and, in winter, its frozen methane bubbles. Even in summer, it’s gorgeous and way less crowded.

Winter highlight: This is where you’ll see the famous frozen bubbles, usually from January to February when conditions are right.

Less touristy stop: Fewer crowds and wide open space make this a great spot to slow down and explore at your own pace.

Tour option: You can also visit Abraham Lake along with Peyto Lake, Bow Lake, and other nearby highlights on a guided tour. This tour also includes winter activities like snowshoeing and icewalking Book here!

Takakkaw Falls

End your loop here. It’s the second-tallest waterfall in Canada, and you can feel the mist from far away. It’s powerful, dramatic, and such a cool place to explore.

Seasonal access: Takakkaw Falls Road is typically only open from late June to mid-October, depending on snowpack and road conditions. Always check current access before you go.

Day 5: Waterfalls + Mountain Views

Must-dos: Johnston Canyon, Mt. Norquay Lookout, Mt. Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift, Lake Minnewanka

This final day brings a mix of adventure and dreamy viewpoints.

Johnston Canyon (Lower & Upper Falls)

One of the most popular hikes in Banff, and for good reason. The trail is super scenic with boardwalks, river views, and waterfalls at every stop.

Trail info: The hike to the Lower Falls is short and easy, while continuing to the Upper Falls adds a bit more distance but is still manageable for most people.

Footing conditions: The boardwalks can be icy or slippery in colder months, so shoes with good grip are important.

Crowds: This trail is popular, especially midday. Going early in the morning helps avoid the busiest times.

Mt. Norquay Lookout

This lookout offers sweeping views over Banff town, framed by some of the most impressive peaks in the area.

Winter tubing: In winter, Mt. Norquay offers tubing on giant snow slopes, and it’s one of the most fun experiences in Banff. It’s even better with a group since you can all tube down together at the same time.

Easy access: A quick drive from Banff town, making this an easy stop to add without committing much time.

That’s why we’ve put together these 10 essential tips to help you navigate it all smoothly—so you can spend less time figuring things out and more time enjoying the adventure.

1. China Visa Tips: Visa-Free Entry & Tourist Visas

If you’re thinking about visiting China, it’s best to start planning 2–3 months in advance, especially if you need a visa.

Travelers from 55 countries (including many in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania) can now enter China visa-free for up to 10 days (240 hours). Check the official list of countries eligible for visa-free entry to China here. 

But if you’re planning to stay longer or your country isn’t on the visa-free list, you’ll need to apply for a tourist visa (L visa). The application process can take time, so we recommend starting at least 8–12 weeks before your trip to avoid any stress.

Here’s what you’ll need for your visa application:

• A confirmed round-trip flight itinerary
  
• Your hotel reservations in each city for the trip
  
• A passport that’s valid for at least 6 months from your trip

Pro tip: Even if you’re eligible for visa-free entry, make sure to have a confirmed flight back home. Immigration will want to see it!

2. Set Up Your Phone Before You Go

Before you land in China, it’s crucial to get your phone travel-ready. Internet access works differently here. Many Western apps/websites are blocked, and mobile data is essential for everything from navigation to payments. Setting up a VPN and eSIM ahead of time will save you major headaches on arrival.

• Get a China-compatible eSIM: use an eSIM like Holafly or Airalo so you’ll have data as soon as you land. It’s especially helpful for calling a taxi, checking translations, or showing hotel confirmations at the arrivals gate.
  
• Download a VPN (if needed): Many Western apps like Google, Instagram, and WhatsApp are blocked on wifi in China. If you want to access them during your trip, make sure to download a reliable VPN or China-compatible eSIM before you arrive (they’re often blocked once you’re there). We used Astrill and had a smooth experience throughout our trip.

3. Set Up Alipay & WeChat to Pay for Everything in China

Nearly everywhere in China, like restaurants, shops, taxis, and street food stalls, accept mobile payment through Alipay or WeChat Pay, and you can link a foreign credit card to these accounts. Physical credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay often don’t work, so setting up one (or both) of these apps is essential!

There’s a 3% fee for using an international card on Alipay and WeChat, but it’s waived for purchases under 200 CNY (about $27 USD).

We recommend downloading and linking both, just in case you run into issues or a vendor only accepts one platform.

At many restaurants and cafes, you’ll scan a QR code at your table or near the counter to access a digital menu, place your order, and pay, all within the app. The menu may only be available through either Alipay or WeChat, so having both is helpful. It’s fast, seamless, and often the only way to order. 

To Use Alipay:

• Download Alipay (iOS) (android) and select the international version during sign-up. We preferred Alipay because the app automatically translates most text and menus into English.
  
• Link your foreign credit/debit card directly in the app
  
• Tap “Scan” to scan a merchant’s QR code, or “Pay” to display your code for the cashier

To Use WeChat:

• Download WeChat (iOS) (android)
  
• Go to Me > Services > Wallet > Cards and link your foreign credit/debit card. Some users may need to try a few times so be patient!
  
• Use the “+” icon > Money > Receive/Pay to scan or display QR codes
  
• Bonus: It has a handy translation feature for menus and chats on the sidebar
  

4. Getting Around China: DiDi, AMaps & Public Transit Tips

Getting around China is surprisingly smooth once you have the right apps set up. Here’s how we navigated everything from taxis to subways with zero stress:

DiDi: China’s Uber Alternative

Download the DiDi Rider: Affordable rides (iOS) (android) app (make sure it’s the China mainland version, not the international one) for easy and affordable rides. 

• Fares are cheaper than in Western countries (a 20-minute ride might only cost 20-40 CNY (~$3-$6) in a Tier 2 city)
  
• The app has English support for key features like pickup points, ride types, and destinations
  
• Just like Uber: enter your destination, confirm your ride, and pay using Alipay or WeChat Pay
  

Best Navigation App in China: AMaps

Since Google Maps doesn’t work well in China, AMaps (iOS) (android)  is the go-to app for accurate directions.

• You can switch to English (the setting is a bit hidden; check under profile > settings)
  
• For best results, search destinations using Chinese characters
  (Tip: Copy and paste names from Google Translate or Dianping)
  
• AMaps also includes real-time public transit info, walking directions, and estimated fares
  

Taking Public Transit in China: What Tourists Need to Know:

Metro systems in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu are incredibly efficient. Each city in China has its own city-specific transit card app on Alipay, so try to set this up before you intend to use it.

• You can tap in and out using your phone; just scan via Alipay
  
• In Alipay, search for your city’s transit card in the “Transport” section to activate it. Make sure you set up a transit card for each city you intend to use public transportation!
  
• AMaps helps you plan routes, view real-time schedules, and find the best exits

Getting around was one of the smoothest parts of our trip, and once you’re set up with these apps, you won’t need a physical transit card or even cash!

5. Booking Trains & Hotels in China

Traveling across China is surprisingly seamless once you know which tools to use, and Trip.com (iOS) (android) is our go-to app for booking both trains and hotels with an English-friendly interface and international payment support.

In many cases, taking the train is actually more efficient than flying, especially between nearby major cities. High-speed trains in China are fast, punctual, and drop you right in the city center, saving you the long airport commute and check-in time.

China’s high-speed rail network is one of the best in the world. To book tickets in English and pay with an international card, we recommend booking trains on Trip.com here:

• Purchase and store high-speed train tickets directly in the app
  
• Use your passport number to book tickets, and bring your physical passport to get through security at the station
  
• For less frequent routes (like Wulong Karst or Zhangjiajie), book in advance to lock in your seat since the better seats sell out quickly
  
• Upgrade your seat for extra comfort! Business class and first class have wider, quieter seating. On local or overnight trains, sleeper cabins are a game-changer compared to standard seats.

Hotel Bookings: What to Know as a Foreigner

Booking hotels in China was surprisingly easy, especially when using the right platform. We found Trip.com to be the most reliable and foreigner-friendly option throughout our trip for a few reasons:

• Many hotels on Trip.com offered free cancellation up to the day of check-in, which gave us flexibility in case plans changed
  
• Prices were often cheaper than for the same listings on Expedia or Booking.com
  
• We had two hotel bookings through Expedia that got canceled because we couldn’t check in and pay before the front desks closed. With Trip.com, we were able to prepay in advance and still get free cancellation, which made the whole process way less stressful, especially for late arrivals.

6. How to Find & Order Food in China (Apps + Tips)

Food was one of our highlights while traveling in China, but ordering can feel intimidating at first. With the right apps (and a few translation tricks), you’ll be discovering local gems and enjoying hotpot in no time.

To Find Restaurants: Use Dianping (大众点评)

Think of Dianping (iOS) (android)  as the Chinese version of Yelp + TikTok. It’s packed with user reviews, short videos, and tons of photos that help you decide where (and what) to eat.

• The app is only in Chinese, so you have to use another translation app or rely on photos + videos
  
• Look for spots with high ratings and lots of recent food pics
  
• Screenshot or bookmark places you want to try; super helpful if you need to show it to a taxi driver or hotel staff for help later

Meituan: China’s Food & Essentials Delivery App

Too tired to go out? Meituan (iOS) (android) is China’s #1 delivery app, and it’s not just for food. While most people use it to order takeout, you can also get everyday essentials delivered right to your hotel. We even ordered a steamer and cables during our trip!

• Link your Alipay/WeChat Pay account to pay
  
• While the app is entirely in Chinese, you can still get by:
  • Use Google Translate’s camera mode to scan and translate menus in real time
  • Rely on food photos and star ratings to decide what to order (just like browsing a visual menu)
    

7. How to Book Attractions in China

For a hassle-free way to book attractions, activities, and local experiences in China, we recommend using Trip.com or Klook (Klook is our favorite!). Both platforms are in English, and they’re super easy to navigate—even if you don’t speak the language.

Important: Many attractions will scan your physical passport as your ticket, so don’t forget to bring it with you when heading out for the day.

• Book everything from skip-the-line attraction tickets to guided tours and cultural experiences
  
• Most tickets are issued as mobile QR codes; just show your phone at the entrance, no printing needed
  
• On Klook, you can also pre-book eSIMs, airport transfers, metro cards, and even theme park passes, all before you land

8. Dealing with Language Barriers: Best Translation Apps

Most people in China primarily speak Mandarin, and English is not widely used, even in airports, train stations, or restaurants. Outside of major international hotels or tourist attractions, you’ll rarely find English signage or staff who speak it. That’s why having a reliable way to translate on the go is essential.

Before your trip, make sure to download the Baidu Translate app (iOS) (android). It’s one of the most effective translation tools for China, especially since Google Translate is blocked and many locals use Baidu as their go-to.

Here’s what helped us the most:

• WeChat’s built-in translator – Long-press any message in a chat and tap “Translate” for quick, real-time translation.
  
• Baidu Translate’s camera mode – A lifesaver for reading menus, signs, and labels; just point your camera and get an instant translation, even offline.
  
• Download the Chinese language pack in Baidu Translate so you can use all features (including camera mode) without internet access, especially useful in subways or remote areas.

9. Toilets in China: What to Expect & What to Pack

Squat toilets are still common in public restrooms, especially in rural areas and smaller towns. In Tier 1 cities like Beijing and Shanghai, you’ll mostly find western-style toilets in hotels, malls, and newer attractions.

Quick tips:

• Carry toilet paper or tissues — many public restrooms don’t provide any
  
• Bring hand sanitizer or wipes — soap isn’t always available

10. Best Time to Visit China in 2025 + National Holidays to Avoid

For the most comfortable weather, the best times to visit China are generally spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Spring brings fresh blooms and a vibrant energy across the country, while autumn is drier, cooler, and ideal for outdoor sightseeing. Keep in mind, though, that optimal travel times can vary by region. What’s ideal in the mountains of Zhangjiajie may be different from the cities of the east coast.

That said, try to avoid major public and school holidays, when millions of locals travel, prices surge, and crowds fill popular attractions. These peak times include:

• Chinese New Year (January/February)
  
• Golden Week (October 1–7)
  
• May Day (May 1–3)
  
• Summer school holidays (late June–August)

Final Tips:

• Don’t rely on Google Maps or WhatsApp – Both are blocked in China. Use AMaps for navigation and WeChat for messaging and day-to-day communication.
  
• Carry your passport with you – Some hotels, attractions, and even train stations may ask to see it.
  
• Screenshot Chinese addresses – Save the name and address of your hotel or restaurant in Chinese (from Trip.com or Dianping) to show taxi drivers or locals if needed.
  
• Get an eSIM before you land – Install a China-compatible eSIM (we used Holafly or Airalo) before your trip so you have mobile data the moment you arrive. This makes it easier to call a DiDi, scan QR codes, or translate on the go, especially at the airport or train station.

1. Put AirTags in your luggage and bags

Between flights getting canceled and redirected to bags being mishandled, there are so many reasons your checked luggage might not arrive with you on time at your final destination. 

Apple AirTags have been a lifesaver for me so I know airlines don’t misplace my bags and I don’t lose out on hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of my belongings since I can actively track where my luggage is.

AirTags also help with providing peace of mind since you can check your phone to see if your checked luggage is in the same location as you are between connecting flights or if you can expect it to come down at the baggage drop.

If your bags are mishandled and sent to a different location or otherwise misplaced, you can track where your bag is. The AirTags are precise enough to tell you where in the airport your luggage is too which can help locate if your bags were moved to storage, are at the baggage carousel, or are still on a plane.

You can also put AirTags in bags you bring around when you’re exploring new areas in case you accidentally leave one of them lying around or somebody tries to steal one of your bags.

2. Make sure your luggage isn’t overweight before you get to the airport. 

Airlines can be strict when it comes to the weight of your check-in and carry-on luggage and you can expect an overweight bag fee or not even be able to check your bag if your luggage is too heavy. Some airports have luggage weighing stations, but it can be stressful and embarrassing to re-arrange all your stuff on the airport floor.

One of my best travel tips is to get a portable travel scale so you never have to worry about your bags being too heavy! A portable travel scale is so important to make sure your luggage is within weight policy so make sure you bring one on your next trip!

Different airlines have different weight policies and you’ll probably get gifts and souvenirs, so the travel scale will help you throughout your trip.

Make sure to get a luggage scale that can measure in pounds and kg if you travel, or expect to travel, through the U.S. like the luggage scale that I use before all of my flights here!

One of my best packing tips for international travel, which also helps with making sure your luggage isn’t overweight, is to get compression packing cubes to organize your clothes and maximize your luggage space. 

Compression packing cubes give you more space in your luggage which provides more flexibility to split the weight into your luggage so none of your bags are overweight.

3. Make photocopies of your passport before you fly out!

One of the scariest issues you can run into while traveling abroad is having your passport get lost, damaged, or stolen since you’ll be stranded there until you get a replacement.

That’s why it’s so important that you make photocopies of your passport before you leave!

If you lose access to your passport while traveling internationally, having a photocopy will make it much easier and can help expedite getting a replacement or emergency passport with your country’s embassy so you aren’t stranded in a different country.

You won’t be able to use the photocopy of your passport to travel between countries, but you might still be able to use the photocopy for things like getting a tax refund at stores or checking into hotels (not guaranteed though!).

Instead of risking losing your actual passport while exploring, you can store your passport in a safe place where you’re staying and take the photocopy with you instead unless you expect you’ll need it.

4. Protect Your Passport and Debit/Credit Cards from Thieves! 

Aside from outright stealing your stuff, did you know that thieves can scan and steal your debit/credit card and passport information just by brushing a scanner up against you? This is because most cards and passports have an RFID chip that allows them to have contactless capabilities.

In crowded areas like popular tourist spots or rush hour on public transportation, it can be impossible to not be shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of other people throughout the day. 

This is why you should get an RFID-blocking wallet, bag, and passport cover to prevent thieves from scanning your cards or passport! RFID-blocking accessories prevent thieves from scanning your credit cards or passports by disrupting the radio waves from their devices so that they aren’t able to connect with them.

5. Get an eSIM from Holafly so you can access the internet abroad!

Unless you have an international data plan, you won’t be able to access the internet on your mobile devices without a new SIM card. You don’t want to leave the airport just to find out that you’re lost and there isn’t wifi or internet nearby you can use to find where to go.

1. Fly on a Weekday

Typically flying during the week is the best time to fly – when it comes to price. Off-peak days are Tuesdays or Thursdays while Fridays and weekends can be more expensive.

To accurately see which days are the best, you can check travel sites like Google Flights to view the cheapest rates. On Google Flights, there are a few ways to do this.

First, you can select “Date Grid” to check the cheapest day to depart and return around the dates you are thinking of traveling on.

Second, you can also sort flights by price and view the cheapest times to travel.

Third, you can select “Price Graph” to see the typical prices over a few months. You can compare dates to see which price works best for you.

If you aren’t sure which area you want to travel to, you can set your departure location and set your destination to anywhere. This way you can check out the cheapest places to travel to during a certain time frame.

2. Avoid Peak Travel Season

The high season usually occurs during summer, winter, and major holidays. Summer peak season is mid-June to August, and winter peak season is the end of November and the end of December. During the summer and winter, most people travel due to their kids being on break, and during the winter, people travel for the holidays or have holiday time off from work. However, shoulder season, or the time between high and low travel seasons, starts from April through mid-June.

If you are traveling in the U.S., there are other major holidays to be aware of such as Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. During these times, flights can be expensive, but if you have to travel during a federal holiday, be sure to book early in advance (at least 2 or 3 months before the departure date)!

If you are traveling outside of the U.S., you should check their major holidays for potential peak times. For example, flights can be expensive when people are traveling to Asia to celebrate Lunar New Year or when people are visiting Germany for Oktoberfest. Being aware of the holidays and avoiding those peak times can help you alleviate high flight prices.

3. Track Flight Prices

If you already have a time frame in mind, you can track flight prices on a travel website like Google Flights. By selecting this option, you will receive alerts sent directly to your email so that you can be aware of when flights increase or decrease in price.

Another tip is to track flight prices across all travel sites. Popular travel sites I use include Kayak, Google Flights, Expedia, and JustFly, and it is important to check to see which site offers the best price to get the best deal. I also check on airline websites like Southwest, Delta, and others. I have personally used Southwest’s deals because they have a lot of amazing discounts. For example, Southwest had a 20% discount for base fares to Hawaii during a 2-month time frame!

4. Purchase Travel Packages

Another potential money-saving option you can do is utilize websites that offer travel packages. For example, Travelzoo offers travel deals that plan your entire itinerary, including flight, activities, and stay all in one. This can help to ease the burden of planning the trip itself, and my friends have had great experiences using it. For example, they currently have an all-inclusive deal with air, hotel, food, and drinks for $599 per person!

A lot of people also rave about Costco Travel. It’s an underrated and underutilized tool that many members do not take advantage of. They offer deals on vacation packages, build your own package, hotels, cruises, rental cars, theme parks, and other specialties. If you have a Costco membership, this is something to look into to best utilize your membership. Plus, Costco has incredible customer service, so they can help you with any questions you may have.

Lastly, I have used Tripmasters for trips around Europe and Asia, and they offer great vacation packages with a lot of flexibility. They curate and recommend great packages, and I liked that I was able to customize their package by adding, subtracting, or changing flights, hotels, and tours on my trip based on my preferences. This website is an all-in-one buildable and customizable travel tool that makes planning a trip easier and seem less daunting. For example, Tripmasters have a deal to 3 cities in Italy for $1,219, and they always allow you to “customize it” to your liking and add more cities to your trip as well!

5. Bundle Activities

Once you’ve booked your flight, it’s time to start booking activities you’d like to do! You can book these activities 1-2 months before your travel date, and I recommend looking for activities that you can bundle at a discount or look on Groupon or Airbnb for deals.

Two of my favorite attraction bundles are offered by CityPASS and Go City. Their bundles showcase the best things to do in a particular city, and there is flexibility on which activities you’d like to do based on their list of top activities. What I love about their passes is that I can do the activities at my leisure, all at a discount. I’ve used these passes when I traveled to Seattle, Chicago, Boston, London, Oahu, and more! These passes always showcase the best and most popular attractions most tourists want to see. For example, you can save 48% on the Chicago CityPass at the top 5 attractions. They even allow you to choose the last 2 attractions from a list of 4 based on your preferences.

Another one of my favorite sites for discount activities is Groupon. You can search for activities in the location you are traveling to and see if there are deals that interest you. I have used this to find activities like jet skiing in Miami, snorkeling in Oahu, and more. You can also search on Airbnb Experiences to see activities or tours hosted by locals in the area you are traveling to!
